After an extended period of development and testing, we are happy to announce a complete redesign of CALMS time series database. It focuses on the exactness and reliability of calculations it makes, so reports and summaries are reproducible and reflect actual measurements that have been taken.

During last month, we have been testing the new database in parallel to the legacy one, resulting in reduced performance of the both systems and odd cases of misbehaving calculations. In retrospect, this was a poor decision that impacted production systems which is unacceptable.

Today, we are starting migration of all energetic systems to the new database. During migration of your system, you may experience reduced performance and gaps of missing latest data. After the migration, the data will be reconstructed in full, without any gaps. We expect that all systems will be migrated in at most 2 weeks.

If you have any wishes about the exact time of migration of your system, please write us at

We are truly sorry for any problems caused.

In compressed air industry we can see two types of audits. First are detail audits done by independent specialised audit companies and second ones are audits performed by compressed air manufacturers or their service providers.

The first audits are normally detailed taking in assessment everything from supply side to distribution with focus on demand side and production proces optimisation. This can take sometimes even more weeks to complete and cost some money depends on saving potential.

The second ones are normally standardised audits focused on the supply side that is compressor room only, maybe combined with fast leak survey, normally free of charge with the goal to sell new equipment.

The idea of any audit is that it must be independent from solution providers otherwise it is not focusing on process and cost/performance optimisation but rather on finding the best solution or product within suppliers list. Audits should be verification of system performance done by independent experts.

The third option is what we call remote audit which can be done by customers alone. With the help of independent compressed air platform WWW.CALMS.COM customer can select audit equipment based on the compressed air system configuration, such as the number of compressors, etc. The equipment will be send to the customer. It comes with instructions on how to install it and connect it to the cloud platform with 3G gateway, where all data will be collected and automatically analysed and basic report created. The customer will be guided step-by-step through interview, assessments, pictures and P/ID schematics. Users data will be evaluated by selected CAS experts to finalise audit or agree for further detail analysis.

This automatic analysis can get each customer an independent basic analysis that is based on measurements for one to four weeks:

  • Current (calculated power) of each compressor
  • Pressure upstream and down stream
  • Dew point
  • Flow optional

User Benefits

  • Easy to order, implement and get fast reliable results – low investment low risk
  • Independent basic audit as first step
  • customer can connect to independent CAS experts and auditors to perform detail analysis and ongoing optimisation of complete process
  • End-user can verify performance of compressed air system, equipment and service provider verification as before-after return of investment tracking
  • Evaluation for energy savings and reliability improvements for the complete system
  • Insights with best in class positioning
  • On the platform customer can connect their system improvements to ESCOs for alternative investment
  • Easy to expand for other utilities for energy management
  • Audits and reports are CSA837, ISO11011, ISO50001 compliant

Customer alone with the help of cloud platform and rental equipment can identify 40-60% of savings potential, the rest can be identified by selected independent expert or professional auditor on the same platform. The platform can offer ongoing optimisation and outsourcing of energy utility to selected experts and ESCOs with complete reporting, analysis, simulations and alarming or just once per year independent system or investment verification.

New trends are coming also to the conservative industrial compressed air market. This is even more obvious since we are all forced to work in a completely different environment where remote means everything in some cases even survival.

What can we do in compressed air systems from remote? First of all compressors must operate 24/7 locally as reliable and efficient as possible, to achieve this we can use remote monitoring to optimise and service them in time and connect all relevant parties on single platform.

In the traditional compressed air market concept the key role belongs to OEMs who deliver equipment (compressors) and parts, do the maintenance and service, optimise the system performance, do audits and assessments and finally verifies the performance of what they achieved. Does it make sense – all in one solution ? I doubt.

Technology to change this concept has been present for some time now and it is especially useful in quarantine times. New trends like SaaS (Software as a Service) are more and more common with major OEMs but there are also some independent platforms offering Paas (Platform as a Service). And there is a major difference between those two. The first (OEMs) are more or less device remote monitoring, taking care for servicing equipment with original parts, exchanging filter elements, alarms, warranty issues and extending service contracts warranty. Of course they also have to offer modules for assessments like leak assessment, system performance monitoring and audits, however here we come to the first conflict of interest since their goal should be to sell more compressors not to reduce air consumption with fixing leaks and inappropriate uses. And the second conflict of interest is verification of CA system by the same party who delivered and optimised it.

But with technology available today like iIoT, cloud based computing there is room for new approach to connect all relevant parties on single independent platform (PaaS). This will bring all the benefits to compressed air end – user who will get the best service possible. Customer will have overview and control over all connected parties starting with independent experts, auditors, service providers, investors-like ESCOs and compressed air manufactures OEMs on one single platform accessible from anywhere.

What benefits can such independent platform brings to the customer?

  • Remote monitoring and more important remote ongoing optimisation with energy saving and reducing carbon footprint
  • Customer (not others) is the owner of all measurement data and analysis
  • Platform is connecting compressed air experts, auditors, energy managers with different skills and industrial knowledge (like cement, textile, car, glass, WWT, …) to the customer.
  • Compare to the best in class, get insight of possibilities to improve
  • Compare different products and solutions independently
  • Rent audit measurement equipment and service before investment and after investment to verify return on investment
  • Service equipment in time; connecting customer with the local service provider, protecting critical equipment (like vibration alerts)
  • Platform also connects potential investors like ESCOs who can help to close projects that have high energy savings potential
  • Using platform as energy management system (EnMS) is the easiest and cheapest way to comply to ISO50001 with possibility to add all Significant Energy Use (SEU) like gas, electricity, compressed air, steam.. with integrated and customised target KPIs
  • Platform will track before-after investment savings events with reporting

There is also another very important thing to know and that is the location of major savings potential in modern compressed air system, which are not anymore in the compressor room nor the distribution side, but rather in the demand side. So for the complete ongoing optimisation the platform will guide you through the process starting with interview, assessments, audit, analysis, simulations, and with help of external experts also to compressed air end-uses and production process optimisations , where the majority of today’s savings potential is.
